Well, pull out the red carpet and take the champers off the ice—this is brilliant news, and your future digital nomad besties are getting ready to celebrate with you.

This is honestly one of the best moves you can make for your career. I mean, take a moment to daydream with me and picture your morning commute: coffee in hand, you stroll through the streets of a new city you call home, admiring the sights as you amble to a cafe or co-working space.

Dreamy, huh? It’s certainly much better than your current commute, squeezing into crowded buses or trains, or stop-go crawling on the highway in your daily traffic jam.

Remote work gives you flexibility, freedom, and the power to design your life on your terms.
But before we can start planning your flight routes and buying bits and bobs for your remote work setup, we need to secure your remote position.

So, where should you start?

Finding the right remote job isn’t just about ditching the office—it’s about discovering a whole new way to work that fits your lifestyle. And, to be completely honest, this isn’t exactly the easiest task so you’re gonna need all the help you can get.

To help you with your remote job search, I’ve compiled a list of the best places where you can find remote jobs. I’ve also included a few considerations you should keep in mind when researching and vetting the jobs you find online.

Why Searching for a Remote Job is Tricky

There are tons of online remote job boards sharing job listings out the wazoo, but in our experience, you, like other remote job seekers we know, may hit a few roadblocks or hurdles in your search.

Why? Because a lot of what you see on the internet is fake.

The modern-day remote job board is flooded with fake job listings, and most of the time, these are data harvesting grabs.

Awful, I know.

Here you are trying to land your dream job, but actually, you end up as a data point, willingly handing over your personal information in a big ole game of deception and lies.

Not a vibe.

While not all remote job sites have this issue, the truth is that roughly only 1% of remote jobs you see online are legitimately fully-remote, allowing you to travel.

The online space is wildly unregulated, and just about any Tom, Dick, or Harry could create a fake company and list a scammy job. Once they get your data, they may even sell your information to third parties.

Or worse, they get you in a money grab where they dupe you to pay for training or required software before your application is considered.

We do not approve.

What to Look For When Searching for a Remote Job

Before I give you the scoop on where to find remote jobs, I’d like to take a step back and share a few consideration points to guide your search.

It’s important for you to deeply and carefully assess the quality of the job listings you’re coming across and practice extreme discernment if you’re considering applying.

We have an entire team dedicated to sourcing legitimate remote jobs, and these are some of the guidelines they follow.

Below is a BTS look into our remote job research and vetting process, shared with you so that you can become an expert bullshit spotter and not waste a second more of your time.

When looking for remote job opportunities, take the following tips and strategies your research process:

1. Validate the job listing.

Your first task is determining whether the job listing is actually a remote job and not an exorbitant display of smoke and mirrors.

Without harping on again, a lot of the remote jobs you’ll find are borderline fraud, so you’ll need to become a little savvy bullshit detector first and foremost.

There are a few eyebrow-raisers to look out for in the job listing, including:

  • Asking for deeply personal information such as social security numbers
  • Promising questionably high compensation for seemingly minimal work
  • Requiring a prepayment or deposit of any sort to begin the application process
  • Not providing clear contact details or company information

Sound the alarm.

If any of the above is in the job listing you’re eyeing, it’s a pretty safe bet that the listing is a scam. If something looks sus, it probably is.

It’s laborious, sure, but taking the time to really make sure the company you’re applying to is legitimate is so worth it in the long run. It reduces your risk of falling victim to scams, as some people are conned out of their hard-earned cash.

2. Look for ‘fully remote’ language.

You’re trying to land a remote job, so what’s the sense in applying for something that surprise! shackles you to an office chair?

When reading through a job listing, make sure the job is genuinely remote by looking for fully remote language or verbiage that affirms this.

Here are some green flag phrases and terms that we look out for before proceeding with our remote job vetting process.

  • “Become a part of our global presence”
  • “Work from anywhere”
  • “Our team is spread across X countries”
  • “Our distributed team”
  • “We’re remote-first”
  • “Work outside of your country of residence for a maximum of X days per year, given that you have a valid work permit for that country”
  • “Location independence”

When reading through listings, seek out these and similar terms. Recognizing this language straight off the bat will give you a clear indication of whether the job role or roles are authentically remote.

Soon, you’ll become a ‘Beach Commute-approved remote work verbiage spotter,’ and you’ll start scanning through listings like rapid fire.

If you don’t see any of these terms in the description, it’s no bueno and a no-go from us.

Once you’ve established that the job is, in fact, remote, dig a little deeper and figure out whether it’s fully remote or whether there are location considerations.

Some companies will be 100% globally remote, stating that you can ‘work from anywhere.’ This means you can take your pick of the location you desire and work without limitations.

Some remote companies have policies that prevent employees from working globally. This restriction could be due to legal or tax reasons, security concerns, or similar reasons.

In cases like this, a job description could say something like, “Work from one of the countries where we operate: Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, or the UK.”

If these conditions align your remote life vision board, then full steam ahead.
One final thing to keep in mind is that some remote companies require timezone crossovers. This means that their remote employees, although able to work from anywhere, will need to show up virtually, either daily or periodically, within typically US hours.

These clauses could look something like, “Must have the ability to work between Pacific Standard Time (US) hours of 9 AM to 6 PM permanently, regardless of your physical location,” or “Availability to work at least 5 hours overlap with 9–5 PM ET,” or similar.

This is important to remember because if you’re pursuing a long-term remote lifestyle, your days will need to be structured around your company-set work time requirements.

For example, 9 AM to 5 PM ET equates to 9 PM to 5 AM in nomad hotspot Bali, so if you’ve got your sights set on settling in Canggu, for example, especially long-term, the time requirement may be a hindrance for you.

3. Research the Company.

Who doesn’t love a good, old-fashioned internet stalk sesh?

Instead of snooping on your ex or deep diving into your favorite influencer’s account after they soft launch their latest love interest (it happens, okay?), put your internet detective skills to use and stalk the company you’re interested in to verify their legitimacy.

Some tips include:

  • Research their website. First, head to their website, read everything you can find, and make sure their facts check out. If the job listing is a scam, there’ll either be no website or a simple site thrown together that looks shady. An authentic company will typically have a detailed ‘About’ page, and if you see a ‘History’ section or images of team members, then you know it’s a safe bet. Look for clear contact information like email addresses (that match the company name), contact numbers.
  • Stalk their socials. Hunt down their active social media accounts on platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter. Go through their feeds and look for signs of regular, professional content distribution. On LinkedIn, in particular, try to find a dedicated company page and see if employees with genuine profiles are listed.
  • Read their reviews. Head over to Glassdoor and read reviews from previous or current employees to validate their legitimacy. Another idea is to check out online platforms like TrustPilot or Google Reviews, as they’ll give you a consumer’s perspective on the company. If you can’t find online reviews about the company you’ll be applying to work with, it’s probably, unfortunately, a scam.

4. Look for a Healthy Work Culture

One key factor we look for in a remote company we back is a healthy work culture and environment, as well as a great work-life balance. We only recommend companies that promise the above, and we intentionally seek out evidence of this on their online presence.

When you’re investigating companies, you should look for this too.

Head over to the company’s About page (or sometimes the dedicated Careers page) and search for words, terms, or verbiage that discuss the internal culture and work environment.

Look for something along the lines of:

  • Not micromanaging employees and giving them freedom and autonomy in their roles.
  • Having flexible work schedules and being supportive of remote culture
  • Enabling employees to perform rather than monitoring 9-5 attendance
  • A focus on balance and freedom
  • Flexible time off or mental health days/weeks (because sometimes life gets in the way of work, and good-natured companies understand this)
  • Team retreats or in-person company-wide get-togethers (this shows a sense of collaboration and community for everyone on the team)
  • A wellness or education budget (this shows that the company cares about personal or self-development and the general well-being of their team)

I love this declaration on the OrderDesk careers page, where they say, “We are invested in each other, we lift each other up, and we respect that we are each humans with lives, interests and struggles outside of our jobs. We are serious about everyone on our team feeling safe, comfortable, and valued at work.”

Warm fuzzies, right?

Some companies have even received awards or recognition for their culture. If so, there’ll be a mention about this like, “We’ve been named a Best Place to Work by the Inc. 5000 and Washington Business Journal.”

A picture speaks a thousand words, so if you see images of the team working formally or informally, enjoying meals together, attending events together, or going on work retreats, you’ll get a pretty good idea of the company vibe you’re signing up for.

Finally, head over to Glassdoor and look for reviews from employees discussing whether they enjoyed working at the company.

5. Use Trusted Platforms

I’ll get into these a bit later in this article, but when searching for your remote job, only use trusted, reputable, and highly credible job boards or sources.

Make sure that the job boards you use are vetting their listings, and if it’s unclear, ask.

6. Reach Out to Your Network

I highly recommend building up a professional network of remote workers as jobs are often passed around between personal connections and it’s a great starting point for your remote job search.

But beyond this, you could tap into a network and ask if anyone has had experience working at a particular company. You may find great insights or advice from your immediate connections.

The Best Sites to Find Remote Jobs in 2024

3. FlexJobs

Another leading remote job board is FlexJobs. In addition to fully remote jobs, FlexJobs offers work-from-home (with remote work limitations) and hybrid listings. It also lists freelance positions.

FlexJobs is a subscription-based job board, but they offer a 14-day free trial for $2.95 (at the time of writing). Each job listing is vetted by the team, so once you’re in, you can relax, knowing the job offers and companies are legitimate.

4. Remote.Co

Remote.Co was founded by Sara Sutton, the same visionary remote work pioneer who founded FlexJobs. As well as offering extensive, legitimate remote jobs, Remote.co also offers educational resources, courses, and a community forum, all geared toward helping digital nomads advance their career remotely.

5. JustRemote

Next on the list is JustRemote, another great resource for finding a remote opportunity. An uncluttered and easy-to-use site, JustRemote offers listings in an array of fields and declares any location restrictions up front for each job.

While some jobs are publicly visible, JustRemote offers a “Power Search” option, which costs $6 for the first month and provides access to additional listings.

6. RemoteOK

A great source for tech and startup jobs, RemoteOK is a go-to platform for remote jobs. With a handy filter feature, you can refine your job search quickly using the job category, budget range and benefits filters.

You can also use the location filter and select the ‘worldwide jobs’ option to display fully remote, work-from-anywhere jobs. You’ll need to create an account to access the job listings.

7. Working Nomads

Working Nomads is another job board site that lists remote work opportunities in tech, marketing, and other job category fields. It offers a premium subscription that unlocks a database of tens of thousands of jobs, billed at a monthly rate of $17.95.

8. Pangian

Pangian, cleverly named after the supercontinent Pangea, believes that everyone is a global citizen of the world and offers remote jobs to support the growing ‘digital nation.’ You need to sign up for an account to access remote job opportunities. Love the name and love the mission here.

9. Remotive

With pre-screened and curated jobs, Remotive is another top-quality remote job board with an impressive roster of employers, including Stripe, Shopify, Zapier, Automattic, and more. A collection of remote jobs is on offer for the public, but you can unlock over 30,000 additional listings for a one-time fee of $158.00 (price at the time of writing).
This fee gets you access to additional bonuses like an advanced job search feature, an AI career coach, and a private Slack community.

10. RemoteHub

Next up is RemoteHub, a great online job board that shares almost any job type across various industries, including freelance opportunities. A handy filter system lets you select fully remote jobs, and job seekers can create an account to post their skills for employers to find them. There’s also a great feature on this job board that lists non-profit organizations and volunteer projects looking for help, so if you are impact-driven, you could find organizations you align with and help out.

  • PowerToFly (strong focus on creating more inclusion and diversity in the global workspace)

  • Virtual Vocations (vast industries on offer, mix of remote and hybrid positions)
  • Dribble (if you’re a graphic designer, this one’s calling your name)
  • WellFound (formerly AngelList, great for those searching for jobs in startups, gotta search through the jobs to find the remote ones)
  • Idealist (jobs in the social impact, non-profit, and development space—some remote jobs are on offer)
  • RoamingDesk
  • Glassdoor (while the focus is company reviews, there are remote job listings as well)

The following are not exclusively remote job boards per se, but they’re great options to consider:

General Job Boards

General job boards like LinkedIn and Indeed are typically a job seeker’s starting point. Here, you’ll find quintillion jobs on offer, so you’ll really need to be specific about your search. Use the ‘remote’ location filter feature to highlight jobs that let you work from anywhere.

These job boards are extremely well-known and highly trafficked, so you’ll find lots of competition here.

Also, they’re a treasure trove for sneaky scammers posting nonsense job listings, so approach your job search on these platforms with a lot of patience and use our job search strategy suggestions above as a guide.

Recruiters

If you’re looking to hand your job search baton to someone else, you could consider enlisting the services of a recruiter that focuses exclusively on remote job placements.

Company Websites

While not a job board in the traditional sense, you could follow a handful of companies that you like and regularly check their Careers page on their website.

Some companies will offer the option to join a mailing list that’ll update you when open positions arise, and others may have an open form that you can fill in for consideration of future positions that may open.
