About the role
GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, enabling organizations to increase developer productivity, improve operational efficiency, and reduce security risk. We embrace AI as a core productivity multiplier and foster a high-performance culture driven by our values.
Site Reliability Engineers at GitLab keep user-facing services and production systems running reliably at scale. They combine software engineering with operational excellence, applying sound engineering principles and automation to evolve our production infrastructure.
Infrastructure Platforms is responsible for the availability, reliability, performance, and scalability of GitLab’s user-facing services, notably GitLab.com. The organization spans teams across Production Engineering, GitLab Dedicated, GitLab Delivery, and Developer Experience.
What you'll do
- Keep user-facing services and production systems reliable, scalable, and efficient.
- Build automation and tooling that reduces toil and replaces manual work with infrastructure-as-code-driven workflows.
- Operate and troubleshoot production systems on Kubernetes, including deployments, rollouts, and scaling.
- Write and maintain infrastructure as code, and ship changes safely through CI/CD and GitOps.
- Participate in on-call, triage alerts, follow and improve runbooks, and escalate appropriately.
- Contribute to the observability stack using metrics, logs, and SLOs to detect symptoms early.
- Take part in incident response and post-incident reviews, turning learnings into changes in automation and process.
- Document runbooks, architecture decisions, and reviews to ensure findings become repeatable practices.
What they're looking for
- Experience keeping production systems reliable, combining operations with software engineering practice.
- Experience building net-new infrastructure tooling and automation, such as Terraform modules or Kubernetes operators.
- Ability to read, debug, and reason about code, specifically in Go or Ruby.
- Experience with infrastructure as code and the Kubernetes ecosystem.
- Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider (GCP or AWS).
- Familiarity with observability practices including metrics, logging, alerting, and SLOs/SLIs.
- Comfort participating in on-call and incident response with a structured approach to troubleshooting.
- Strong written communication and ability to operate as a manager-of-one in an async, distributed environment.
- Track record of using automation and AI to reduce toil.

The hot takeJeff's read on Gitlab
GitLab has put more effort into their employee marketing and policies than 99.99% of the companies we've researched over the years. Seriously, their handbook is absolutely massive.
The ONLY thing that throws me off about them is an unclear statement about their stance on what "work from anywhere" actually means. They say:
"All-remote means that each individual in an organization is empowered to work and live where they are most fulfilled."
But they also say that hey need to have an entity in your home country in order to be hired, so I'd love to know if they have a list of the countries they will hire from.
