About the role
Supabase is the Postgres development platform, built by developers for developers. We provide a complete backend solution including Database, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime, and Vector Search. All services are deeply integrated and designed for growth.
We're looking for a Postgres Deployment Engineer to elevate our PostgreSQL offerings, owning stability and deployment of our products. You'll work hand-in-hand with the PostgreSQL team, contribute to technical decision-making, and bridge product and infrastructure teams to improve the reliability of deployments and upgrades.
Supabase was born-remote and open-source-first. Our globally distributed team includes ~400 team members across 60+ countries, speaking 20+ languages. We move fast, build in public, and use what we ship.
What you'll do
- Contribute to and share responsibility for builds and deployments via our public supabase/postgres GitHub repository, which bundles features and products into Docker images and AWS AMIs.
- Package software into supabase/postgres using either Nix language with flakes or Debian packaging, depending on the required target.
- Expand knowledge of our platform release system so developers can increasingly self-service.
- Expand our GitHub Actions, team tooling, and testing and release approaches.
- Deliver timely PostgreSQL major, minor, and extension upgrades.
- Proactively identify and resolve production issues in customer deployments.
- Create and maintain best practices, tools, and tests to enhance stability and decrease deployment risks.
- Improve the utility and efficiency of our PostgreSQL offerings.
- Work with relevant teams to understand PostgreSQL stability issues and apply those insights to build, test, and deploy AMI and Docker releases.
- Enhance our public GitHub repositories, especially supabase/postgres.
- Develop and expand tooling and solutions within the Supabase ecosystem.
- Engage with customers routinely, ensuring our solutions resonate with their needs.
What they're looking for
- 3+ years experience with PostgreSQL and its ecosystem.
- A profound understanding of PostgreSQL and its associated tools, including extensions, performance optimization, and best practices.
- Proven expertise in infrastructure management, tooling, and optimization.
- Independence, proactive problem-solving, and initiative; ability to thrive in asynchronous collaboration across diverse teams.
- Knowledge of Ansible, Nix package management including nix flakes, Packer, Docker, qemu/kvm, AWS, and Kubernetes deployments.
- Experience with Linux and Darwin/macOS aarch64 targets, maintaining the ability to build for both architectures.
- Experience with conventional and Nix-packaged builds of C/C++, Go, JavaScript, and Rust-based projects.
- Exposure to public cloud platforms and deployment methodologies.
- Eagerness to improve and expand our development tools and stack.
- Comfortable with regular interactions with customers.
- Willingness to work within and optimize an integrated approach to packaging that combines conventional and Nix-based systems, including flakes, rather than applying Nix packaging to every component or adopting NixOS in production.
- Willingness to share responsibility for teaching our engineering team to learn, use, and contribute to our Nix-based work, and help troubleshoot and solve issues across the platform and PostgreSQL stack.
Nice to have
- Experience with PostgREST, gotrue/supabase auth, and other Supabase stack components.
- Contributions to significant, open-source projects in the PostgreSQL domain.
