About the role
Lumos is the industry's first Autonomous Identity Platform, providing software that acts on access risk for companies like GitHub, MongoDB, and Pinterest. At the center is Albus, an AI agent that mines roles and catches access drift that humans miss.
As a Software Engineer on the AI Agent Governance team, you will help build a brand new product from the ground up to govern how AI agents act within cloud workloads and company laptops. You'll join a small, fast-moving team in a rapidly redefining category.
Since launching in 2022, Lumos has raised over $65M from top investors including a16z and Greg Brockman. The company has been recognized as a top startup employer by Forbes for three consecutive years.
What you'll do
- Ship backend features end to end, from rough customer asks to production, often within days.
- Ensure value is delivered to customers beyond just shipping to a spec.
- Participate as a valued member of the on-call rotation.
- Build testing systems and harnesses that allow agents to ship changes safely.
- Work directly with customers to resolve issues.
- Utilize agents heavily in day-to-day work while maintaining a deep understanding of system architecture.
What they're looking for
- 1+ years of professional software engineering experience or an equivalent track record of shipping products.
- Strong backend fundamentals with experience building APIs, databases, and services in production.
- Proficiency with Python, Postgres, OpenSearch, gRPC, and AWS.
- AI native mindset with an understanding of tool calls, MCP servers, hooks, and context.
- Comfort with ambiguity and experience working in small, fast environments.
- Ability to take ownership in a high-intensity role.
Nice to have
- Experience with endpoint or client software (MDM, software that runs on laptops).
- Security or identity background.

The hot takeJeff's read on Lumos
I like A LOT about what I see from Lumos, including their 4.7 Glassdoor rating, full medical benefits, wellness stipends, and $1k annual learning and development stipends.
The only thing (in my mind) that keeps Lumos from moving into the top tier of work-from-anywhere companies is their +/- 4 hour PST timezone restriction. That covers a lot of territory, but would limit digital nomads to only travel in the Americas. It's not clear whether or not you have to be physically located within the +/- 4 hour window, or if they will let you work those hours from anywhere. 🏋🏾♀️ Health and wellness: $100 bucks a month for health and wellness spend.
👶🏾 Parental leave: Up to 4 months of it. 📚 Learning budget: $1,000 bucks a year on learning and development spend. 🌴 Unlimited PTO: But make sure you actually use it!
